South Bend Water Department Installs New Water Meters
South Bend has approximately 20,000 outdated manual read water meters currently in use.
Feb 15, 2012
The South Bend Water Works Department plans to install new Automated Meter Reading (AMR) water meters for customers. South Bend has approximately 20,000 outdated manual read water meters currently in use. The water meters in South Bend are typically found in basements, crawl spaces or utility closets. This requires access to the inside of homes requiring an appointment to conduct a meter change. Here are the ways the Water Works Department will attempt to contact City residents to change outdated meters:
First Attempt: Phone call to the customer using the phone number on the account.
Second Attempt: A letter is sent to the resident’s home.
Third Attempt: A hang tag is left on the resident’s front door knob.
Final Attempt: A special hang tag for shut off is left on customer’s door with contact numbers to call to get water service restored. This phone number is 235.9464 and it is answered 24/7.
The new AMR technology is safer and more efficient for Water Works employees and more accurate for customers. The meter change process requires only 30 minutes. The appointments for a meter change can be flexible to accommodate customer’s work schedules.
